“The function of sociology, as of every science, is to reveal that which is hidden.”

— Pierre Bourdieu

Welcome to the
International Sociology Olympiad

Through sociological case study evaluations and an international debate, the International Sociology Olympiad gives students the opportunity to showcase their ability to analyze and question the social world.

Participants will:

  • Investigate

  • Interpret

  • Articulate and debate

the forces that shape human behavior and society.

By exploring issues such as:

  • Structural inequality

  • Surveillance and digital life

  • Globalization and migration

  • Gender, race, and identity

  • The future of education and work

In a time of rapid social transformation, from AI and migration to political polarization and digital subcultures, the International Sociology Olympiad invites thinkers to explore the forces that govern power, identity, and inequality. Through real-world case study analysis and a dynamic international debate, participants will demonstrate sociological insight, research depth, and argumentative skill.

The International Sociology Olympiad is completely online and invites students globally to step into the role of social analyst by exploring the systems, symbols, and struggles that define modern life. Case studies evaluations are to be submitted via a Typeform link for the regional round and finalists will be invited to a live online debate

How Does It Work?

The Olympiad is divided into two rounds: Regional and International. The regional round is a case study competition and the international round is a global debate where regional finalists will compete.

Regional Round:

Write a 1000-word case study analysis evaluating one of three sociological prompts provided on the launch date.

Students will have 7 days to research, analyze, and submit their response via a Typeform link.

Essays should apply sociological theory, incorporate real-world data or examples, and propose thoughtful insights (see Guidelines and Rules).

International Round:

Finalists will be invited to a live online debate, where they will respond to a real-time sociological scenario involving institutions, norms, power, and identity.

Students will represent a perspective, such as a policymaker, activist, sociologist, or community leader and debate competing social strategies (see Guidelines and Rules).
